This is the first of three blogs in which she will show you how to do some book-binding at home&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>A part of my job that I always look forward to is running bookbinding sessions.\u00a0 Regardless of someone\u2019s skill set, all participants leave the session with their own excellent example of a binding, and there is something very rewarding in creating an object with your own hands.\u00a0 Whilst staying at home, many of us are trying new activities, so we have attached to this blog instructions for the three bindings I usually teach.<\/p>\n<p>For the lessons I run at DHC, we provide participants with the required bookbinding material, but if you don\u2019t have your own book-cloth or mull, which I\u2019m sure many of us don\u2019t, I\u2019ve suggested some alternatives that I hope you might have available around the house.<\/p>\n<p>Have fun!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1390\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1390\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1390\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1.png 594w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1-300x102.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Japanese stab-stitch binding; Single-section pamphlet; Piano-hinge binding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8212;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Japanese stab-stitch binding<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>What you\u2019ll need:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>5 to 10 sheets of plain paper<\/li>\n<li>2 sheets of patterned paper<\/li>\n<li>Scissors, or scalpel, ruler and cutting mat<\/li>\n<li>Ruler and pencil<\/li>\n<li>Bulldog clip or paperclips<\/li>\n<li>Something to puncture holes in the paper eg an awl or needle<\/li>\n<li>Thread (5 x the width of the paper) and needle<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Instructions:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut all your pieces of paper, including the covering material to the same size (ours is 10 x 15cm).<\/li>\n<li>On one of the cover sheets, measure out your puncture holes.\u00a0 (These instructions are for a four-hole binding, but once you\u2019re confident with the technique, you can use many holes to create different patterns.) Using a pencil, mark four holes along a short edge, 2cm in from the edge of the paper and 2cm apart from each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1391 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-1-e1586343702841.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-1-e1586343702841.png 446w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-1-e1586343702841-270x300.png 270w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a bulldog clip or paperclips to secure all the sheets together with the covers on the outside. Using an awl or needle, pierce the paper at the pre-marked holes, being careful that the paper doesn\u2019t mis-align. \u00a0If you have a piece of stiff foam, or similar, to place under the paper whilst puncturing the holes, this can sometimes help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1392 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-2-e1586344059591.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-2-e1586344059591.png 510w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-2-e1586344059591-300x181.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thread your needle and sew the paper together using the following method (the dash lines indicate the thread is on the other side of the binding):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1. Start at hole B, push your needle and thread through, leaving a couple of inches of thread to tie a knot with at the end. Wrap around the spine and insert your needle back through hole B, being careful not to puncture the thread already in the hole.\u00a0 Pull the thread snug.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1393 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-3-e1586344141511.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"613\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-3-e1586344141511.png 613w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-3-e1586344141511-300x215.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Next, insert your needle through hole A (from the back of the binding). Insert needle back into hole C. The thread should be pulled snuggly.\u00a0 Tie the two ends together in a knot positioned over a hole and cut off the ends.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1400 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-10-e1586345777431.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"606\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-10-e1586345777431.png 606w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Japanese-10-e1586345777431-300x212.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Other patterns can be made \u2013 these are a couple of examples of traditional ones, but you could make your own designs.
