This is the second of three blogs in which she will show you how to do some book-binding at home&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>A part of my job that I always look forward to is running bookbinding sessions.\u00a0 Regardless of someone\u2019s skill set, all participants leave the session with their own excellent example of a binding, and there is something very rewarding in creating an object with your own hands.\u00a0 Whilst staying at home, many of us are trying new activities, so we have attached to this blog instructions for the three bindings I usually teach.<\/p>\n<p>For the lessons I run at DHC, we provide participants with the required bookbinding material, but if you don\u2019t have your own book-cloth or mull, which I\u2019m sure many of us don\u2019t, I\u2019ve suggested some alternatives that I hope you might have available around the house.<\/p>\n<p>Have fun!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1390\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1390\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1390\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1.png 594w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1-300x102.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Japanese stab-stitch binding; Single-section pamphlet; Piano-hinge binding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8212;<\/p>\n<h2>Making a Single Section Pamphlet<\/h2>\n<h3>What you\u2019ll need<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Six or eight sheets of plain or coloured paper<\/li>\n<li>Scissors, or scalpel, ruler and cutting mat<\/li>\n<li>Something to puncture holes in the paper eg an awl or needle<\/li>\n<li>Thread (3 x the length of the spine) and needle<\/li>\n<li>A thinly woven material (we used bookbinders mull but some old cotton or linen would do fine)<\/li>\n<li>Two pieces of stiff card or board (two or three layers of a cereal box glued together would work)<\/li>\n<li>Thick material for the spine (we used book-cloth, but you could make your own version by brushing glue onto the back of some cloth and allowing it to dry)<\/li>\n<li>Two sheets of patterned paper to cover the boards<\/li>\n<li>Glue and brush<\/li>\n<li>Scrap paper eg old newspaper<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Instructions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut paper to size (our paper measured 11 x 18cm). Stack the paper together and fold in half.\u00a0 Using an awl or similar, carefully puncture five equally spaced holes along the spine \u2013 the outer two holes being at least 1cm from the edge of the paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1405\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-1-e1586350312219.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"708\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-1-e1586350312219.png 708w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-1-e1586350312219-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 708px) 100vw, 708px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thread your needle and sew the paper together using the following method:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Start inside the folded paper and push your needle through the middle hole (Hole A in the image below). Leave a couple of inches of thread inside the fold \u2013 you will need this to tie a knot with at the end<\/li>\n<li>Push your needle through adjoining hole (B) and pull through the thread so that it is tight against the paper<\/li>\n<li>Take your needle through the next adjoining hole (C).<\/li>\n<li>You now want to insert your needle back through hole B. Be careful not to puncture the thread that is already in the hole<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re now on the inside of the fold. SKIP OVER hole A and push your needle through hole D<\/li>\n<li>Come back in through hole E<\/li>\n<li>Then back through hole D (again be careful not to puncture the thread already in the hole)<\/li>\n<li>Bring your needle back in hole A. Make sure the ends of the thread are either side of the thread running past the hole (see image below).<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the thread is not loose by gently pulling each section and tie a knot over the passing thread. Cut off the ends of the threads.\u00a0 This is your completed text-block.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1409\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-2-and-3a-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-2-and-3a-1.png 588w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-2-and-3a-1-300x175.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut a piece of the thin cotton or linen approximately 1 cm smaller than the length of your spine by approximately 4cm wide (ours is 10 x 4cm). Apply a thin layer of glue and adhere it to the spine, making sure it is properly stuck to the paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1410 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-4-e1586351213292.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-4-e1586351213292.png 504w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-4-e1586351213292-300x243.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut boards the same width as the paper and 1cm longer (ours are 12 x 9cm). Apply a thin layer of glue to the first board and adhere to the paper.\u00a0 The board should be positioned 5mm from the edge of the spine, so that the boards extends beyond the paper by 5mm on the head, tail and fore-edge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1411 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-5-e1586351885566.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-5-e1586351885566.png 730w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-5-e1586351885566-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adhere the second board on, making sure it lines up with the first board. Allow these to dry.<\/li>\n<li>Cut a piece of book-cloth or similar so that when folded in half it will wrap around the spine and cover approximately a fifth of the width of the board and is at least 3cm longer (ours is 15 x 5cm). Fold the cloth lengthwise to form a crease \u2013 this will help you to attach it to each side of the book equally.<\/li>\n<li>Apply a thin layer of glue and adhere it to the spine \u2013 spend time working it into the creases between the paper and the boards and make sure it\u2019s well adhered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1412 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-6-e1586352036890.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"532\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-6-e1586352036890.png 532w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-6-e1586352036890-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-6-e1586352036890-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-6-e1586352036890-250x250.png 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once the book-cloth is fully adhered to the spine, the extra cloth at the top and bottom needs to be tucked in. Open the boards and apply some more glue to one of the book-cloth ends. Carefully fold the cloth over and tuck in between the outer page (which is adhered to the boards) and the rest of the text-block.\u00a0 This is a bit fiddly but preserve, making sure the book-cloth is push in as far as it can go and is tight against the boards, with as few creases as possible.\u00a0 Do the same at the other end of the spine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1413 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-7-e1586352194937.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"938\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-7-e1586352194937.png 938w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-7-e1586352194937-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-7-e1586352194937-768x440.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 938px) 100vw, 938px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut to size the two pieces of patterned paper that you have chosen for the cover. They need to be at least 4cm longer and roughly the same width as your boards (ours are 16 x 9cm). Start with the corners of the paper.\u00a0 Apply a little glue to the corners and turn in at a 90<sup>O <\/sup>\u00a0 Work the paper into the creases but be careful not to tear it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1416 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-10-e1586352455863.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-10-e1586352455863.png 446w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-10-e1586352455863-252x300.png 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Now apply a thin layer of glue to the edges and turn them in, making sure they\u2019re flush against the board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1417 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-11-e1586352546500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-11-e1586352546500.png 382w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Pamphlet-11-e1586352546500-222x300.png 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply the cover paper to the other board following the same steps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The finishing touch is to adhere the \u2018endpapers\u2019 which will hide the rough edges of the cover paper and book cloth.
