This is the third of three blogs in which she will show you how to do some book-binding at home&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>A part of my job that I always look forward to is running bookbinding sessions.\u00a0 Regardless of someone\u2019s skill set, all participants leave the session with their own excellent example of a binding, and there is something very rewarding in creating an object with your own hands.\u00a0 Whilst staying at home, many of us are trying new activities, so we have attached to this blog instructions for the three bindings I usually teach.<\/p>\n<p>For the lessons I run at DHC, we provide participants with the required bookbinding material, but if you don\u2019t have your own book-cloth or mull, which I\u2019m sure many of us don\u2019t, I\u2019ve suggested some alternatives that I hope you might have available around the house.<\/p>\n<p>Have fun!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1390\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1390\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1390\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1.png 594w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/Bookbinding-1-300x102.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Japanese stab-stitch binding; Single-section pamphlet; Piano-hinge binding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&#8212;<\/p>\n<h2>Making a Piano Hinge Binding<\/h2>\n<h3>What you\u2019ll need<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>At least five sheets of paper for the book and two pieces of thicker paper or card for the cover \u2013 you can use different colours to make patterns or a rainbow effect on the spine<\/li>\n<li>Wooden skewers (or you can use anything of a similar shape such as pencils or twigs) \u2013 one fewer than the number of sheets of paper you\u2019re using<\/li>\n<li>Scissors, or scalpel, ruler and cutting mat<\/li>\n<li>Ruler and pencil<\/li>\n<li>Glue and brush<\/li>\n<li>Coloured threads and beads<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Instructions<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut every piece of paper (including the cover) the same size. An extra 1cm is required for the spine if you\u2019re using standard wooden skewers.\u00a0 If you are using thicker pencils or twigs you will need to allow more paper to wrap around them (we made our binding 12 x 12cm, so the paper measured 12 x 25cm).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1424 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-1-e1586353699575.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"771\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-1-e1586353699575.png 771w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-1-e1586353699575-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-1-e1586353699575-768x451.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take your first sheet of paper and fold it in half by wrapping it around a skewer. Use your finger to press the paper into the skewer to create an obvious crease.\u00a0 You will need to do this gently so as not to tear the paper. Then turn the paper and skewer over and crease the other side. Repeat with all your pieces of paper, including the cover paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1425 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-2-e1586353850478.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-2-e1586353850478.png 600w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-2-e1586353850478-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Draw on four equally spaced marks along the fold by dividing the width of your paper (<em>x<\/em>) by 5. Try not to press down on the crease \u2013 you want it to remain rounded rather than flattened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1431 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-3-e1586353915456.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-3-e1586353915456.png 744w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/04\/piano-3-e1586353915456-300x119.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 744px) 100vw, 744px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut small triangles out at each mark. These triangles should go up to the crease but not beyond it.\u00a0 If the triangles are too large your skewers will fall out.\u00a0 Continue with all your sheets \u2013 ensure all the triangles are at the same place on all your pieces of paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1432 size-full\" you\u2019ve cut all your pieces of paper, gently press all the odd tabs in one direction, and all the even tabs in the other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1433 paper to one side for later.<\/li>\n<li>Take the first two pieces of paper and place them together, so that their tabs face in the same directions.\u00a0 Use a skewer to thread through the tabs, alternating the pieces of paper.\u00a0 The even tabs of one piece and the odd tabs of the other should be on the skewer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1434 this with all the folded paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1426 size-full\" the covers.<\/li>\n<li>Take one of the cover pieces of paper and gently push the <strong style=\"font-size: 20px\">two even<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\"> tabs into the inside of the folded paper.\u00a0 Apply glue to the inside of the fold to adhere the folded sheet together, trapping the two tabs.\u00a0 Do not glue all the way into the fold.\u00a0 Take the other piece and push in the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 20px\">three odd<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px\"> tabs and glue the folded sheet together.\u00a0 Allow the glue to dry.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img attach the front and back covers by threading them into the remaining gaps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1429 size-full\" length of thread to one of the outer skewers and weave between the skewers at each end of the paper.
