noreferrer\">Dorset Archives Trust<\/a> Document Purchase Fund the Dorset\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">istory Centre recently purchased a beautiful\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dc.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/calmview\/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&amp;id=D-3227%2f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1802<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">manuscript map of an estate in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thornford<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 Thornford\u00a0is in the\u00a0north\u00a0west corner of Dorset\u00a0near Sherborne. \u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was prepared for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">George Tilly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gollop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and surveyed by John\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Davioge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ns<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ford<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(probably near Castle Cary)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 1802.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">George Tilly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gollop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a Dorset landowner who\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actually lived<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Netherbury<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in common with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">most 18<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and 19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0century landowners, held lands in many parts of the county including\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">areas around\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Netherbury<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is\u00a0typical of an estate map in that it\u00a0shows\u00a0numbered\u00a0plots\u00a0of land\u00a0owned by\u00a0George Tilly\u00a0Gollop.\u00a0\u00a0There would have been a written\u00a0survey\u00a0that listed the\u00a0numbered\u00a0plots of land,\u00a0probably showing the names of the tenant,\u00a0the area of the plot, what it was used for (e.g. arable, meadow,\u00a0house, garden etc), and possibly what rent\u00a0was\u00a0paid\u00a0by the tenant.\u00a0\u00a0The map also\u00a0indicates\u00a0who\u00a0owns\u00a0the other land in the\u00a0area\u00a0with the Earl of Pembroke\u00a0owning much of the parish.\u00a0Dorset\u00a0History\u00a0Centre\u00a0holds other\u00a0uncatalogued\u00a0records\u00a0of the\u00a0Gollop\u00a0family\u00a0in\u00a0Thornford\u00a0so it is possible that the\u00a0survey\u00a0for this map is amongst them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1791\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/07\/D-3227-1802-Thornford-Plan-section2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/07\/D-3227-1802-Thornford-Plan-section2.jpg 527w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2020\/07\/D-3227-1802-Thornford-Plan-section2-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The map is a good example of how it is possible to see the development of road layouts, bridleways and footpaths in an area<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as well as explaining local features and landmarks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Davioge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has included a lovely little drawing of the church and has noted the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">position of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Boot Inn in the village.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Boot Inn seems to have survived until the 1880s when the Kings Arms became the village pub,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0still exists today<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">presumably Boot Lane is a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reminder of the earlier village<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0pub<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The ruins of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thornford<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Mill\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can be seen on the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">River Yeo, which\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">perhaps\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">clarifies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0why the course of the river is different at this point.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">E<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">xplanation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or Key clearly shows features such as hedges and ditches<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, stiles and gates and footpaths and \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">publi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">k<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">roads\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 This can be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">very useful and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maps such as these have been\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">used\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to investigate the status of modern\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rights of way.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0village\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at the beginning of the 19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0century\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and useful for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">researchers in providing additional information for the period\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">before the Tithe map<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and census<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span
