Thanks to the Dorset Archives Trust<\/a> Document Purchase Fund the Dorset\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>istory Centre recently purchased a beautiful\u00a0<\/span>1802<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>manuscript map of an estate in\u00a0<\/span>Thornford<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Thornford\u00a0is in the\u00a0north\u00a0west corner of Dorset\u00a0near Sherborne. \u00a0<\/span>It was prepared for\u00a0<\/span>George Tilly\u00a0<\/span>Gollop<\/span>\u00a0and surveyed by John\u00a0<\/span>Davioge<\/span>\u00a0of A<\/span>ns<\/span>ford<\/span>\u00a0(probably near Castle Cary)<\/span> in 1802.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

George Tilly\u00a0<\/span>Gollop<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span>a Dorset landowner who\u00a0<\/span>actually lived<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>Netherbury<\/span>\u00a0but<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0in common with\u00a0<\/span>most 18<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0and 19<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0century landowners, held lands in many parts of the county including\u00a0<\/span>areas around\u00a0<\/span>Netherbury<\/span>\u00a0and Sherborne.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is\u00a0typical of an estate map in that it\u00a0shows\u00a0numbered\u00a0plots\u00a0of land\u00a0owned by\u00a0George Tilly\u00a0Gollop.\u00a0\u00a0There would have been a written\u00a0survey\u00a0that listed the\u00a0numbered\u00a0plots of land,\u00a0probably showing the names of the tenant,\u00a0the area of the plot, what it was used for (e.g. arable, meadow,\u00a0house, garden etc), and possibly what rent\u00a0was\u00a0paid\u00a0by the tenant.\u00a0\u00a0The map also\u00a0indicates\u00a0who\u00a0owns\u00a0the other land in the\u00a0area\u00a0with the Earl of Pembroke\u00a0owning much of the parish.\u00a0Dorset\u00a0History\u00a0Centre\u00a0holds other\u00a0uncatalogued\u00a0records\u00a0of the\u00a0Gollop\u00a0family\u00a0in\u00a0Thornford\u00a0so it is possible that the\u00a0survey\u00a0for this map is amongst them.<\/p>\n

The map is a good example of how it is possible to see the development of road layouts, bridleways and footpaths in an area<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0as well as explaining local features and landmarks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>John\u00a0<\/span>Davioge<\/span>\u00a0has included a lovely little drawing of the church and has noted the\u00a0<\/span>position of the\u00a0<\/span>Boot Inn in the village.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The Boot Inn seems to have survived until the 1880s when the Kings Arms became the village pub,\u00a0<\/span>this<\/span>\u00a0still exists today<\/span>, but\u00a0<\/span>presumably Boot Lane is a\u00a0<\/span>reminder of the earlier village<\/span>\u00a0pub<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The ruins of\u00a0<\/span>Thornford<\/span>\u00a0Mill\u00a0<\/span>can be seen on the\u00a0<\/span>River Yeo, which\u00a0<\/span>perhaps\u00a0<\/span>clarifies<\/span>\u00a0why the course of the river is different at this point.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>E<\/span>xplanation<\/span>\u00a0or Key clearly shows features such as hedges and ditches<\/span>, stiles and gates and footpaths and \u2018<\/span>publi<\/span>c<\/span>k<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>roads\u2019<\/span>.\u00a0 This can be\u00a0<\/span>very useful and\u00a0<\/span>maps such as these have been\u00a0<\/span>used\u00a0<\/span>to investigate the status of modern\u00a0<\/span>rights of way.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The map\u00a0<\/span>is a wonderful snapshot of\u00a0<\/span>Thornford<\/span>\u00a0village\u00a0<\/span>at the beginning of the 19<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0century\u00a0<\/span>and useful for\u00a0<\/span>researchers in providing additional information for the period\u00a0<\/span>before the Tithe map<\/span>\u00a0and census<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
