Today, we have chatted with Clare, our Collections Assistant in Digital Preservation, who lets us know about how she has been working remotely and her favourite document from our collections…<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During lockdown I had the chance to work remotely with our digital archive, taking the opportunity to tidy up\u00a0<\/span><\/span>digital\u00a0<\/span><\/span>files behind the scenes, ensuring that our collections are preserved and available to view in our online catalogue. Whilst doing this I was asked the question, “What is your favourite document?<\/em>“<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0tough question! The archive is immense and covers\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a breadth of<\/span><\/span> areas! W<\/span><\/span>hilst\u00a0<\/span><\/span>working from<\/span><\/span>\u00a0home<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I got to delve into a wide variety of collections from local history; Bournemouth and Weymouth \u2013 black and white photos from 1900s<\/span><\/span>, The Stewarts Business archive <\/a><\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>that includes a personal favourite of mine<\/span><\/span>),<\/span><\/span> two people delivering a cheese plant capturing the early 80s fashion of the time; and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0not forgetting<\/span><\/span>\u00a0images of Dorset<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>s nature taken by Captain Cyril Diver CBE<\/a><\/span><\/span> in 1930 as part of a ground breaking ecological study of the wildlife on Studland! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of the above<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>glimpses of what is available to view.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0For me though<\/span><\/span>, w<\/span><\/span>ith<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0keen<\/span><\/span>\u00a0interest in art and design, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>c<\/span><\/span>ollection<\/span><\/span>\u00a0that stands out<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the most<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is the Poole Pottery archive<\/span><\/span>. M<\/span><\/span>y<\/span><\/span>\u00a0favourite document<\/span><\/span>, taken from this archive,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>this\u00a0<\/span><\/span>loose-leaf<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Pattern Book from 1930-1959.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is striking<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>about this Pattern Book<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is the bold use of colour and how preserving the designs digitally ha<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0captured the vivid colours. In this archive you<\/span><\/span>\u00a0will<\/span><\/span>\u00a0see designs by Truda Carter and her contemporaries that were used for Poole Pottery nursery and tableware. Carter<\/span><\/span>, an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>important and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>influential\u00a0<\/span><\/span>art deco\u00a0<\/span><\/span>designer<\/span><\/span>\u00a0worked for the pottery between 1921 and 1950<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>creat<\/span><\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the vast majority of the patterns that decorated Poole\u00a0<\/span><\/span>p<\/span><\/span>ottery during the 1920s and 30\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is these brightly coloured, loosely floral, abstract designs for which she is best known.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I particularly like the stylised flowers<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0use of geometric shapes familiar in art deco, and the opportunity to see how a pencil sketch progresses into a full design<\/span><\/span>\u00a0–<\/span><\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>original\u00a0<\/span><\/span>notes and annotations on some pages.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes this<\/span>\u00a0document<\/span>\u00a0so special is that\u00a0<\/span>Poole Pottery earthenware featuring these designs<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0is still\u00a0<\/span>around<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>very collectable<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>today.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dorset History Centre houses the Poole Pottery archive<\/a> including information, not\u00a0<\/span>just<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>product design, but on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>other areas of the business\u00a0<\/span>too\u00a0<\/span>such as\u00a0<\/span>company history, property, finance and clay mining.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
