\u00a0<\/span>We are<\/span>\u00a0excited to\u00a0<\/span>offer a\u00a0<\/span>paid\u00a0<\/span>traineeship in digital archives as part of the Bridging the Digital Gap programme run by The National Archives and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Bridging the Digital Gap aims to increase digital skills in archives by bringing new talent into the sector to create a more diverse and inclusive workforce.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0trainee<\/span>\u00a0will be\u00a0<\/span>involved in a wide range of digital activities at Dorset History Centre, home of the archive service for\u202fChristchurch, Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole.\u202f<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202f<\/span>The trainee<\/span> will have the chance to\u202fbecome familiar\u202fwith Preservica, our digital preservation system,\u202fto\u202fupload both born-digital and digitised material.\u202f<\/span>Other projects will focus on<\/span>\u00a0collect<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0important digital record<\/span>s and\u00a0<\/span>improv<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the discoverability of Dorset\u2019s archive collections.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There will be opportunities to\u202flearn about and\u202fdevelop skills in a range of activities\u202fworking with colleagues in community engagement, volunteering, records management,\u202farchive conservation\u202fand museum development.\u202f<\/span>The trainee will also have access to specialist training and development workshops offered by The National Archives. The trainee will work towards Foundation Membership of the A<\/span>rchives and\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>ecords\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ssociation<\/span>, the professional body for archives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dorset History Centre<\/span>\u00a0belongs the E-Preservation West Consortium, one of the two groups of archives offering traineeships in the 2021-22 programme. Each consortium has four archives, each with their own trainee. Throughout the programme, all eight trainees will meet up regularly and share learning, either in person or online, while they develop key skills to prepare them for an exciting career in the heritage sector.<\/span>\u00a0Previous trainees based in London<\/span>, Norfolk and Yorkshire<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are now employed in digital roles at the British Library, Cambridge University Library, and British Film Institute.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are looking for a talented technical person to use their skills, energy and digital confidence to help us preserve our history and find new ways for people to access and learn from that heritage.\u00a0<\/span>The application opens on 1 September and closes on 30 September 2020. The traineeship commences in January 2021.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
