Although much altered and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">expanded<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the core of the house and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the surrounding gardens have seen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0out<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Tudors,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stuarts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the English Civil War and the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">changing fortunes of the landed gentry.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perhaps then it is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unsurprising<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Athelhampton has long been supposed to house a wide variety of non-corporeal\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">residents. Wentworth Day who<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0interviewed several\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eyewitnesses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. She tells of a friend who was a guest at the house when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">her pre-dinner reading was\u00a0interrupted;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She looked up to see two young men come into the room who did not address her but started to duel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he was very annoyed and asked them kindly to stop but with no effect, so she got up\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and pulled the bell for one of the servants. Nothing happened so she returned to her chair feeling most irritated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uring this time the young men were still fighting till one got wounded in the arm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and they left the room.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alfredo (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alfred de Lafontaine)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">came into the room shortly after<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and the lady, who was still ir<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">itated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My dear\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lfredo, what extraordinary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people you have staying here&#8221;.
