\u201cIndeed Repentance oft I swore\u201d! groaned the Elephant, as he struggled to raise a very pink bald head from the pillow.<\/em><\/p>\n

Geoffrey had no one to talk to. \u2013 so on the whole was lucky!<\/em><\/p>\n

We bade each other a somewhat bleak au revoir and wished each other a Happy and Sober New Year!<\/em><\/p>\n

We had promised lunch with \u201cUncle\u201d Harry Macintyre on our return journey to London.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was a faintly misty day, but the South Downs looked very beautiful when the sun came through.<\/em><\/p>\n

We travelled fairly straight home for once, – Rowlands Castle, Petersfield, Liphook and Hindhead.<\/em><\/p>\n

Uncle Harry\u2019s new house \u2013 a charming one, which he built himself is just off the main road, overlooking a wide stretch of heathland.<\/em><\/p>\n

He gave us, as always a supremely good lunch. \u2013 I guess he had \u2013 a large hand in the cooking of it himself!<\/em><\/p>\n

In the early afternoon we were homeward bound \u2013 through Guildford and Esher and Putney.<\/em><\/p>\n

Christmas was over!<\/em><\/p>\n

Not the Christmas we had dreamed of. \u2013 \u201cDoes it I ask myself, really exist today\u201d? Perhaps in some remote corner of this island. Old customs \u2013 are still preserved. \u2013 Perhaps tucked away, there is that ancient Inn<\/u>, all shining coppers and glowing hearth, – beams laden with holly and mistletoe, and bustling happiness when the Turkey and the Plum pudding are cooking away in the big old fashioned oven. Outside there is white snow and a robin on the window sill. And there are candles to light us to bed. And lavender scented sheets —-!<\/em><\/p>\n

Ach! I was born too late \u2013 but I will still go \u201cIn search of\u201d \u2013 after all it\u2019s what makes life worth while, –<\/em><\/p>\n

Curse Charles Dickens all the same!<\/em><\/p>\n
