At DHC our trained volunteers are usually collecting oral history interviews<\/span>\u00a0and we are usually working with several\u00a0<\/span>community\u00a0<\/span>projects wh<\/span>ich<\/span>\u00a0are planning<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a project\u00a0<\/span>or recording<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0However, with the advent of Covid these activities ceased.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have followed advice from the Oral History Society<\/a> and\u00a0<\/span>The British Library<\/a> and have throw<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0the efforts of remote volunteers into transcription and ana<\/span>l<\/span>ysis.\u00a0<\/span>The volunteers have done really well, especially as some of them have been working with Microsoft Teams software for the first time<\/span>, and one new member of the team has not met any of us face to face!\u00a0<\/span>They have almost completed the transcriptions of the twenty-five oral histories we collected 2019\/20 from members of the Dorset<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>LGBT+ community, and\u00a0<\/span>two<\/span>\u00a0of our volunteers\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0working on analysis of this material with the help of a<\/span>\u00a0lecturer on Bournemouth University’s Public History course.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We were also able to transcribe a<\/span>\u00a0recent<\/span> interview with John Stockley<\/span><\/a>. John’s\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ather was a\u00a0<\/span>Black GI in Weymouth and we drew attention to this interview during October’s Black History Month<\/a><\/span>. However,\u00a0<\/span>John’s\u00a0<\/span>memories and reflections are<\/span>\u00a0fascinating\u00a0<\/span>listening at any time<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>it is great that DHC is\u00a0<\/span>storing contemporary\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>xperiences and reflections for our\u00a0<\/span>descendants<\/span>\u00a0to learn from in the decades and centuries ahead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in\u00a0<\/span>March we\u00a0<\/span>were\u00a0<\/span>accessioning a number of\u00a0<\/span>collections including material from Holton Lee<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0Pilsdon\u00a0Community<\/span>\u00a0and the Okeford Fitzpaine Local History Group<\/span>. Members of the Dorchester\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ommunity Play were also about to start recording some of the history of this\u00a0<\/span>hugely influential local movement.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since\u00a0then\u00a0s<\/span>everal projects have b<\/span>e<\/span>en\u00a0<\/span>in touch\u00a0<\/span>wondering how they should proceed at present.\u00a0<\/span>Our best advice is to read the guidance jointly produced by the Oral\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>istory\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span><\/a>ociety and the British Library.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This points to the over-arching\u00a0<\/span>importance of the welfare of both interviewer and interviewee<\/span>\u00a0and provides some very practical information on the technical and ethical challenges of remote interviewing.\u00a0<\/span>Currently,<\/span>\u00a0face to face interviewing is not an option<\/span>, but the end is in sight\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>a delay in recording of a few months is not usually detrimental to a project<\/span>– in fact it\u00a0<\/span>can allow more time and scope for project planning.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
