{"id":2159,"date":"2021-01-18T09:30:30","date_gmt":"2021-01-18T09:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/?p=2159"},"modified":"2021-01-18T09:31:39","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T09:31:39","slug":"to-record-or-not-to-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/2021\/01\/18\/to-record-or-not-to-record\/","title":{"rendered":"To Record or Not to Record&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At DHC our trained volunteers are usually collecting oral history interviews<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and we are usually working with several\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">projects wh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ich<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are planning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a project\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or recording<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0However, with the advent of Covid these activities ceased.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have followed advice from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohs.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oral History Society<\/a> and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The British Library<\/a> and have throw<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the efforts of remote volunteers into transcription and ana<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ysis.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The volunteers have done really well, especially as some of them have been working with Microsoft Teams software for the first time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and one new member of the team has not met any of us face to face!\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They have almost completed the transcriptions of the twenty-five oral histories we collected 2019\/20 from members of the Dorset<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">LGBT+ community, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">two<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of our volunteers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0working on analysis of this material with the help of a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0lecturer on Bournemouth University&#8217;s Public History course.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2160\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2160\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2160\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/John-Stockley.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/John-Stockley.png 480w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/John-Stockley-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Stockley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/DSA\/252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We were also able to transcribe a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0recent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> interview with John Stockley<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. John&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ather was a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Black GI in Weymouth and we drew attention to this interview during October&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/2020\/10\/05\/black-history-month-john-stockley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black History Month<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">memories and reflections are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fascinating\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">listening at any time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it is great that DHC is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">storing contemporary\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">xperiences and reflections for our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">descendants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to learn from in the decades and centuries ahead.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Back in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">March we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">accessioning a number of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collections including material from Holton Lee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Pilsdon\u00a0Community<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the Okeford Fitzpaine Local History Group<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Members of the Dorchester\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ommunity Play were also about to start recording some of the history of this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hugely influential local movement.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since\u00a0then\u00a0s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">everal projects have b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">en\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in touch\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wondering how they should proceed at present.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohs.org.uk\/advice\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our best advice is to read the guidance jointly produced by the Oral\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">istory\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ociety and the British Library.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2161\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/Listening-to-oral-history-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/Listening-to-oral-history-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/Listening-to-oral-history-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/Listening-to-oral-history-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/Listening-to-oral-history-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/01\/Listening-to-oral-history-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This points to the over-arching\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">importance of the welfare of both interviewer and interviewee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and provides some very practical information on the technical and ethical challenges of remote interviewing.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Currently,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0face to face interviewing is not an option<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but the end is in sight\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a delay in recording of a few months is not usually detrimental to a project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;
