Making New Year\u2019s resolutions is a tradition that reportedly goes back around 4,000 years to the time of the ancient Babylonians. Despite humans practicing<\/span>\u00a0making resolutions<\/span> for millennia we seem to be quick to abandon them! This is the month that New Year\u2019s resolutions most commonly fail, with 80%\u00a0<\/span>of resolutions being cast aside in February.\u00a0So\u00a0we\u2019re diving into the archives to bring you some inspiration to persevere with your goals, whatever they may be.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drink less alcohol<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In reactio<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0to the relaxation of\u00a0<\/span>licensing laws and increased availability of alcohol in the 1830s,\u00a0<\/span>Temperance Societies were set up to counter\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0‘wave’ of public drunkard-ness. Led by the non-conformist churches and trade unions the Temperance movement encouraged\u00a0<\/span>people to abstain from the demon drink<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>\u00a0Temperance poster\u00a0<\/span>in our collections\u00a0<\/span>aim<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to set people on the right path\u00a0<\/span>by depicting<\/span>\u00a0Temperance Land. In the centre is Moderation Town, from which the\u00a0<\/span>towns-folk<\/span>\u00a0have a choice; they can travel Resolution Road to Temperance Town where they will find ‘Beautiful country covered with gardens and richly cultivated lands’ or they can travel Grog Lane to Intemperance Town on the Gulf of Ruin where they will find a ‘count<\/span>r<\/span>y covered with heavy fog and dark clouds, low and unhealthy land infested with thieves’<\/span>. Which road will you choose?!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
