There are some lovely pieces celebrating love, and the angst that goes along with it!<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, from the Dorset County Museum King Collection archive is this very fragile 19<sup>th<\/sup> century example of an intricately folded love poem, with numbered verses, decorated inside with pink and yellow hearts. William John Bankes is thought to be the most artistic and creative member of the Bankes family, having an avid appreciation for art, poetry and theatre, he studied at Trinity College Cambridge alongside fellow contemporary the poet, Lord Byron, and lifelong friend. This poem is part of an autograph album compiled, we think, by Daphne Bankes in the 1910s\/1920s &#8211; one of four scrapbooks of letters from various dignitaries, famous people and politicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>The love letter and poem <em>These Wounded Hearts<\/em>\u00a0from The Miller family archive of Plush in Dorset is beautifully illustrated by hand with water colours, the letter to Mary appearing almost like a watermark through the illustration.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2223\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2223\" style=\"width: 859px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2223 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/02\/D-295-5-001-rotated-e1612428067151-859x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"859\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/02\/D-295-5-001-rotated-e1612428067151-859x1024.jpg 859w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/02\/D-295-5-001-rotated-e1612428067151-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/02\/D-295-5-001-rotated-e1612428067151-768x916.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/02\/D-295-5-001-rotated-e1612428067151-1288x1536.jpg 1288w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2021\/02\/D-295-5-001-rotated-e1612428067151.jpg 1677w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 859px) 100vw, 859px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2223\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">D-295\/5<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote><p>Mary<\/p>\n<p>Come Gentle let us prove<\/p>\n<p>By Yonder limpid stream<\/p>\n<p>Let pride and Scorn be banished far<\/p>\n<p>And let your pity beam<\/p>\n<p>O banish anger from those lips<\/p>\n<p>That smile on all but me:<\/p>\n<p>Remember I\u2019m your faithful swain,<\/p>\n<p>Reward my constancy<\/p>\n<p>When will the happy morn arrive, That I shall call you mine;<\/p>\n<p>Till then pray let me sign myself<\/p>\n<p>Your faithful Valentine<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Signed by Michael Miller it is thought to be dated circa 1803.
