As April is\u00a0<\/span>National Pet Month<\/span><\/a>, we thought we\u2019d take the opportunity to share\u00a0<\/span>a few<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fascinating<\/span>\u00a0furry friends featured in our collections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A man\u2019s best friend<\/h2>\n

A 2020 survey found that dogs are the most popular pet in the UK, with 26% of adults owning one.\u00a0<\/span>Until 1987 all dog owners<\/span>\u00a0in Britain<\/span>\u00a0were required to obtain a\u00a0<\/span>licence<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>One<\/span> example from 1935 permits Nathaniel Yates to keep one dog.<\/span> The cost of the\u00a0<\/span>licence<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span>7 shillings and 6 pence, approximately \u00a31<\/span>9 in today\u2019s money. The penalty for keeping a dog without a\u00a0<\/span>licence<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span>\u00a35, the equivalent of 3 days wages for a skilled tradesman<\/span>\u00a0then<\/span>\u00a0or approximately \u00a3253 today.\u00a0<\/span>The reverse of the\u00a0<\/span>licence<\/span>\u00a0sets out the symptoms of rabies, which includes the warning that owners should listen out for their dogs \u2018ordinary bark being replaced by a peculiar howl.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
