{"id":2313,"date":"2021-04-05T08:30:37","date_gmt":"2021-04-05T08:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/?p=2313"},"modified":"2021-03-31T10:53:27","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T10:53:27","slug":"pets-of-the-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/2021\/04\/05\/pets-of-the-past\/","title":{"rendered":"Pets of the Past"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As April is\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">National Pet Month<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we thought we\u2019d take the opportunity to share\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a few<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fascinating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0furry friends featured in our collections.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A man\u2019s best friend<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A 2020 survey found that dogs are the most popular pet in the UK, with 26% of adults owning one.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Until 1987 all dog owners<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Britain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0were required to obtain a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">licence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> example from 1935 permits Nathaniel Yates to keep one dog.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The cost of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">licence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">7 shillings and 6 pence, approximately \u00a31<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">9 in today\u2019s money. Even\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Austrian\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bakers were inspired by the long-necked creatures,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">serving\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giraffentorten<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Vienna\u2019s cafes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">giraffe\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">arrived in London for George IV<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in mid-1827<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0along with two\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">milk\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cows and two Arabian keeper<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and was added to his menagerie at Sandpit Gate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The giraffe survived for less than two years and was stuffed by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">taxidermist\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John Gould. Another giraffe was sent to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Emperor\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fran<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">z<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I of Austria<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, living at Sch\u00f6nbrunn Palace until its demise\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">only 8<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0months later. The third, and most well documente<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0giraffe was sent to Charles X of France.
