{"id":3133,"date":"2022-06-24T08:30:59","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T08:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/?p=3133"},"modified":"2022-06-23T13:35:53","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T13:35:53","slug":"hardys-wessex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/2022\/06\/24\/hardys-wessex\/","title":{"rendered":"Hardy&#8217;s Wessex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In May, a new touring exhibition opened called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wessexmuseums.org.uk\/what-we-do\/exhibitions-events\/thomas-hardy-exhibition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hardy\u2019s Wessex<\/a>\u2019.\u00a0 Curated by the Wessex Museum Partnership, the exhibition is being displayed across four museums: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dorset Museum<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poolemuseum.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poole Museum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/salisburymuseum.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Salisbury Museum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiltshiremuseum.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wiltshire Museum<\/a>.\u00a0 Each museum explores a different theme, and together it is the largest collection of Thomas Hardy objects ever displayed at one time.\u00a0 To prepare for the exhibition DHC was asked to conserve a number of items, to ensure their stability and therefore safety during transport and display.\u00a0 This blog will look at just a few of these items and will give a taste of what visitors might expect to see at the museums.<\/p>\n<h3>Dorset Museum: &#8216;The rural landscape &#8211; social tensions&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>The theme of Dorset Museum\u2019s display explores Hardy\u2019s thoughts on social inequalities, as well as his passion for the protection of animals.\u00a0 Amongst the items on display are <em>The Mayor of Casterbridge <\/em>and <em>The Dorsetshire Labourer<\/em> manuscripts.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Mayor of Casterbridge<\/em> binding had become detached from its text block and the first page was loose.\u00a0 To repair it, new spine linings were adhered with a flange that extended beyond the spine towards the boards.\u00a0 The endpapers were carefully lifted on the boards and the flange inserted beneath, thus reattaching the binding to the text block.\u00a0 The loose page was reattached in place with a Japanese paper hinge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3145\" style=\"width: 1864px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3145\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/1-and-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1864\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/1-and-2.jpg 1864w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/1-and-2-300x91.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/1-and-2-1024x312.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/1-and-2-768x234.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/1-and-2-1536x468.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1864px) 100vw, 1864px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Mayor of Casterbridge<\/em>, before and after conservation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Dorsetshire Labourer<\/em> had some minor tears and creases.\u00a0 These were flattened and repaired using a thin Japanese paper and wheat starch paste.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3144 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/3.-DL-after-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/3.-DL-after-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/3.-DL-after-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/3.-DL-after-1024x639.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/3.-DL-after-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/3.-DL-after-1536x958.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/06\/3.-DL-after-2048x1278.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Wiltshire Museum: &#8216;The ancient landscape &#8211; superstitions&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Wiltshire Museum is looking at how superstition and old beliefs of Wessex were incorporated into Hardy\u2019s stories.\u00a0 Within the collection is a pamphlet <em>Some Romano-British Relics found at Max Gate, Dorchester <\/em>written by Hardy and read at the Dorset Natural History and Antiquarians Field Club meeting in 1884.<\/p>\n<p>The pamphlet is Florence Hardy\u2019s own copy. \u00a0It is a small single section binding which was held together by staples that were rusting and there were some small tears and folds.\u00a0 The rusting staples were carefully removed, and the pamphlet was sewn together with bookbinding thread, through the original holes the staples had made.
