correspondence, poetry, diaries, manuscripts, architectural plans, photographs, printed books, pamphlets and ephemera.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1197\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/12\/Hardy-letter-Acc11145-1024x646.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/12\/Hardy-letter-Acc11145-1024x646.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/12\/Hardy-letter-Acc11145-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/12\/Hardy-letter-Acc11145-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/12\/Hardy-letter-Acc11145-1536x968.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/12\/Hardy-letter-Acc11145-2048x1291.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Less positively, access to this archive is currently very restricted with a miscellany of finding aids and lists instead of a single uniform catalogue.\u00a0 At present, anyone searching would be told that a box list of the Hardy archive exists and that a detailed catalogue is planned for the future.\u00a0 What this means for people researching Hardy is that it is not possible to find things which would otherwise be clearly described online.\u00a0 This presents a real obstacle in terms of research as people are obliged to make further enquiries of DHC which in turn has to search through lists and boxes to see if any relevant material exists.<\/p>\n<p>In short, this archive is not easy to find and use which given its significance is highly problematic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3268\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/H_2010_210_159_1-1024x789.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/H_2010_210_159_1-1024x789.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/H_2010_210_159_1-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/H_2010_210_159_1-768x592.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/H_2010_210_159_1-1536x1183.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/H_2010_210_159_1-2048x1578.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The archive is safely preserved on the environmentally-controlled shelves of DHC\u2019s repositories. However, the current catalogue entry states that the archive is held in Dorchester, but little more than that.\u00a0 Therefore, one of the most in-demand collections at DHC and a jewel in Dorset\u2019s archival and heritage crowns is also one of those about which we have relatively little information to share with the public.\u00a0 This is the situation we wish to address by creating a permanent tool by which the archive can be searched and accessed by anyone \u2013 whatever their interest in Hardy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3269\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/IMG-3467-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/IMG-3467-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/IMG-3467-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/IMG-3467-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/IMG-3467-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/08\/IMG-3467-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fair to say that cataloguing (whether it be archives or objects) is the poor relation of public engagement (that is outreach, exhibitions etc) with very little dedicated funding available.\u00a0 Cataloguing works!\u00a0 It represents a long-term investment and the real starting point for any other form of outreach and engagement.\u00a0 It offers benefits over many decades with a permanent legacy that allows anyone interested to actually find things unaided by third parties \u2013 and thus to get on with their research accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>DHC is working alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetarchivestrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dorset Archives Trust<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hardysociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Thomas Hardy Society<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dorset Museum<\/a> to try to raise \u00a360,000 to deliver this project.\u00a0 The funding is required to employ an archivist over 18 months who will work with volunteers to document this magnificent archive.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to contribute you can go to our donations page on the website of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetarchivestrust.org\/article\/unlocking-thomas-hardy-fundraising-to-open-up-access-to-the-finest-hardy-archive-in-the-world\">Dorset Archives Trust<\/a>.\u00a0 Any support pledged there can also benefit from Gift Aid.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Thank-you for your support!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A crowdfunding appeal by Dorset History Centre and partners Dorchester is home to the finest archive of material by and about Thomas Hardy in the world \u2013 that is, the primary sources which support and inform any new research into Hardy and his contemporaries.\u00a0 The archive is recognised by UNESCO as a collection of international&hellip;
