Over the course of this series of blogs, we will show you what it is possible to learn about a house and its occupiers through the course of history.<\/p>\n<p>Full addresses were rarely used until the 1900s and even when names or numbers are given, names could be changed or streets could be renumbered. As a Royal Manor many of the court documents for Fordington are held at the National Archives, but the History Centre holds over 2000 documents connected to the Parish.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest mention of the cottage that we have found is in a demise dated 1789. In this document the cottage is referred to as \u2018Dolls Hole\u2019, a name also found in the 1844 Tithe map apportionment. Helpfully there are also documents that refer to \u2018Icen cottage, formerly known as Doll\u2019s Hole\u2019 so we can be sure that this is the same plot of land!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3309 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220520_153310_226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220520_153310_226.jpg 650w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/IMG_20220520_153310_226-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In A.D. Mills&#8217; book \u2018<em>The Place Names of Dorset<\/em>\u2019 he suggests that the name Doll\u2019s Hole may have originally been \u2018Dowle\u2019s Hill\u2019. There are many entries for the Dowle family in the parish registers of Fordington St George, the earliest being the baptism of Annie, daughter of Richard Dowle in 1627.<\/p>\n<p>In its history, we have found out that the cottage was a carpenters workshop, twice a school, and saw the birth of triplets.
