A successful harvest with an abundance of crops was literally a matter of life and death for rural communities and their animals. We can see the importance of harvest and the celebrations surrounding it reflected in our collections.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3333\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3333\" style=\"width: 1721px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3333\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/PE-STG_MI_5_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1721\" height=\"2392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/PE-STG_MI_5_5.jpg 1721w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/PE-STG_MI_5_5-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/PE-STG_MI_5_5-737x1024.jpg 737w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/PE-STG_MI_5_5-768x1067.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/PE-STG_MI_5_5-1105x1536.jpg 1105w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2022\/10\/PE-STG_MI_5_5-1473x2048.jpg 1473w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1721px) 100vw, 1721px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/PE-STG\/MI\/5\/5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>PE-STG\/MI\/5\/5<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Everyone pitched in<\/h3>\n<p>Our records demonstrate how bringing in the harvest required everyone to help. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/D-GOO\/2979\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A rental agreement for a tenement and land in Upwey from 1669<\/a> includes the provision of a harvest man at harvest time and one for the corn harvest for one day alongside the tenant\u2019s rent.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 150 years later in Bere Regis the Parish Overseers of the Poor were trying to encourage farmers to employ local people to work on the farms. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/PE-BER\/OV\/11\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">An agreement between parishioners and farmers<\/a> states agricultural labour from outside the parish was not to be used except carters, shepherds and for getting in the harvest.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century <a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/S-156\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">school log books<\/a> frequently recorded the absence of children due to them helping with haymaking, potato picking, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/S-130\/2\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">generally helping with the harvest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As agricultural technology has developed farmers became more reliant on their machinery than the wider community. Services of thanksgiving were held in churches, usually decorated with the season\u2019s harvest.
