I was a Digitisation Conservator at the BL for 6 years and was lucky to be involved in some fantastic projects, such as working on Ethiopic manuscripts; the treatment of 400 pre-1200 illuminated Western manuscripts; assisting in the development of a conservation studio in Palestine and, very relevant to me now, the digitisation of the Sherborne Missal. A condition assessment was first carried out to identify those items in need of conservation treatment. These items were then further prioritised based on current accessibility and content. Treatment has yet to begin on these items but will range from making bespoke housing, removal of self adhesive tape, repairs to damaged bindings, and stabilising tears to paper. Take a look at the photos below for a sneak peak into the project.

B.300 single damaged sheet housed between boards

1958.8.18 tears and losses on a letter written to Barnes

H.6445 Hardy’s personal scrapbook.
