In the first of two blogs this week we will take a look at how Dorset celebrated these occasions through the archives we hold.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the century, Queen Victoria, who had reigned from 1837 until her death on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> January 1901 (a reign which lasted almost 64 years, then the longest in British history) was succeeded by her son Edward.<\/p>\n<p>Memorial services for Queen Victoria were held all over the country and we hold an order of service for one held at St Mary\u2019s Church in Melcombe Regis:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3678\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3678 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture1-e1682691991424-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture1-e1682691991424-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture1-e1682691991424-654x1024.jpg 654w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture1-e1682691991424-768x1203.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture1-e1682691991424.jpg 871w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/D-2985\/1\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">D-2985\/1\/3<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>King Edward VII (1901-1910)<\/h2>\n<p>Edward was 59 when he became King Edward VII on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> January 1901, following the death of Queen Victoria. The Coronation was initially set for 26<sup>th<\/sup> June 1902, but two days beforehand it was postponed until 9<sup>th<\/sup> August, owing to Edward having appendicitis which required an emergency operation. We hold a souvenir programme, for the Coronation and celebrations in Dorchester, for Edward VII:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3679\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1143\" height=\"1735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture2.jpg 1143w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture2-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture2-675x1024.jpg 675w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture2-768x1166.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2023\/04\/Picture2-1012x1536.jpg 1012w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1143px) 100vw, 1143px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Edward VII served as King until his death on 6<\/span><sup>th<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 20px\"> May 1910, aged 68, His body was laid in state at Westminster Hall until his burial on 20<\/span><sup>th<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 20px\"> May in St George&#8217;s Chapel, Windsor. Celebrated a week later because of the non availability of the town band. Rev Brown leads the Procession\u201d.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">George V served as King until his death on 20<\/span><sup>th<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 20px\"> January\u00a01936 and was succeeded by his eldest son Edward.
