The recipe was loose in an envelope marked &#8216;How to make a Bible Cake&#8217;, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/D-2161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sadborow Cookery Book<\/a>, a late seventeenth, early eighteenth-century cookery book.<\/p>\n<p>Bible Cake, also known as Scripture Cake or Old Testament Cake, is a kind of puzzle in that the baker is required to know the Bible (or have one to look up references) to discover what ingredients are needed.<\/p>\n<p>Made and eaten mainly at Christmas, Easter and Weddings it was a very popular cake in the nineteenth century and was often used to teach young girls in Sunday School both baking and Bible verses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5083\" style=\"width: 1379px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5083\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1379\" height=\"831\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake1.jpg 1379w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake1-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake1-1024x617.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake1-768x463.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1379px) 100vw, 1379px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/records\/D-2161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D-2161: How to make a Bible Cake<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5080\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1379\" height=\"2032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake2.jpg 1379w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake2-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake2-695x1024.jpg 695w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake2-768x1132.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2026\/04\/BibleCake2-1042x1536.jpg 1042w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1379px) 100vw, 1379px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although no method is included with the recipe it follows the general rules of cake baking:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Grease a cake tin lightly with butter and line it with some baking parchment.<br \/>\n\u2022 Chop up Nahum iii, 12 fine.<br \/>\n\u2022 In a mixing bowl cream together Judges V, 25, Jeremiah VI, 20, and I Samuel XIV, 25. Slowly add Jeremiah VI, 20 one at a time and beat to mix.<br \/>\n\u2022 Add to this bowl I Samuel XXX, 12, Nahum III, 12 and half of Numbers XVII, 8 and beat until everything is mixed.<br \/>\n\u2022 In a large mixing bowl sift together 1 Kings IV, 22, Amos IV, 5 and Chronicles IX, 9, Leviticus II, 13 and make a well in centre<br \/>\n\u2022 Pour the first mixing bowl ingredients into the well in the centre of the second mixing bowl, (wet ingredients into the dry ingredients) and stir until a cake batter starts to form.<br \/>\n\u2022 Lastly slowly add enough of Judges IV, 19 into the cake batter so it becomes easier to mix, and the mixture will easily drop off the mixing spoon.
