{"id":828,"date":"2019-04-22T09:15:25","date_gmt":"2019-04-22T09:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/?p=828"},"modified":"2019-04-16T07:47:22","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T07:47:22","slug":"828","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/2019\/04\/22\/828\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting the records back on track!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Within the strong rooms of the Dorset History Centre are a collection of extremely popular and highly used documents.\u00a0 It may come as a surprise to some that these documents are plans of railway undertakings.\u00a0 Whilst they don\u2019t have the immediate visual appeal of an illuminated manuscript or estate map, the information they provide can be most enlightening.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-831\" style=\"width: 880px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-831\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_29-1024x601.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_29-1024x601.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_29-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_29-768x451.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">QDP(M):R3\/29<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This example page comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/dcc.dorsetforyou.com\/calmview\/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&amp;id=Q%2fD%2fP(M)%2fR%2f3%2f29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QDP(M): R3\/29<\/a>, dated 1846, and depicts the proposed line at Spetisbury.\u00a0 The path of the railway is shown as a single black line, and the plan includes approximately 400 yards of detailed landscape either side of the line.\u00a0 Roads, rivers, buildings and ancient landmarks are all accurately plotted.\u00a0 Fields and parcels of land are numbered, and an accompanying Book of Reference provides details of owners and occupants.\u00a0 Also included is a cross section of the land, showing the vertical plane through which the railway will pass.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-833\" style=\"width: 880px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-833\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_12-1024x667.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_12-1024x667.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_12-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/04\/QDPM_R3_12-768x500.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dcc.dorsetforyou.com\/calmview\/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&amp;id=Q%2fD%2fP(M)%2fR%2f3%2f12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">QDP(M):R3\/12<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As working documents, many of the plans are in a very poor condition.\u00a0 Stored in a rolled format since their production, the plans are difficult to access without causing them physical damage.\u00a0 Most have multiple tears due to poor handling.\u00a0 The paper from which many are made is poor quality and fragile, and some rolls are actively deteriorating;
