{"id":887,"date":"2019-06-03T08:41:47","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T08:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/?p=887"},"modified":"2019-06-03T08:42:34","modified_gmt":"2019-06-03T08:42:34","slug":"d-day-on-the-home-front","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/2019\/06\/03\/d-day-on-the-home-front\/","title":{"rendered":"D Day on the Home Front"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday 6 June 2019 is the 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of D Day.\u00a0 This important landmark of World War Two will be commemorated across the country, and much of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>D Day holds particular significance for Dorset as the county was in the front line of the build up to the invasion of Europe.\u00a0 Soldiers from America, Canada, and France, as well as British troops were stationed across Dorset, with many areas becoming militarised zones.\u00a0 The coastline became a rehearsal stage for the planning of the event and, in the seas off the coast, the fleet was assembled.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-889\" style=\"width: 762px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-889 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_Cover-of-book-for-Dorset-WI-News.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"762\" height=\"968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_Cover-of-book-for-Dorset-WI-News.jpg 762w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_Cover-of-book-for-Dorset-WI-News-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">W-19\/1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dorset History Centre holds a unique record of the war years viewed from the \u2018Home Front\u2019.\u00a0 In the years after the war the Dorset Federation of Women\u2019s Institutes provided sheets of special paper for each Institute to record the WI contribution to the war effort and events that had taken place in their town or village.\u00a0 Not all Dorset Institutes sent in an account but those that did are often beautifully illustrated with cartoons, drawings, watercolours and photographs.\u00a0 The individual sheets of paper were then skilfully bound to create the <a href=\"http:\/\/dcc.dorsetforyou.com\/CalmView\/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&amp;id=W-19%2f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WI War Record Book<\/a>.\u00a0 In June 2007 this book was a winner in the British Library Hidden Treasures competition when it was fully digitised.<\/p>\n<p>The preparations for D Day feature in a number of entries with descriptions of the thousands of troops massing for the \u2018push\u2019, many of whom became friends but were then deployed abroad leaving \u2018for an unknown destination\u2019. There are vivid accounts of the invasion force particularly of the hundreds of aircraft flying south to France over many Dorset villages.<\/p>\n<p>In Cranborne for example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>During the week preceding D Day, preparations for the great adventure reached a climax, huge quantities of transport passing continually day and night on their way to the Coast.\u00a0 On the night immediately before, the air was filled with the noise of great planes starting up, preparatory to the take off at dawn, when the gliders passed over us in tow with their large white stars.\u00a0 The ill-fated gliders going to Arnhem were also seen passing over in great numbers one Sunday a.m.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Coastal towns and villages played a direct part in the preparations.\u00a0 Parts of the Mulberry Harbour were built on the local beach in the village of Osmington. \u00a0Studland became a restricted area and rehearsals were staged along the shoreline for the landings on the Normandy beaches.\u00a0 An observation post was set up and \u2018<em>From this shelter many \u201cVery Important Persons\u201d watched the landings<\/em>\u2019 including Winston Churchill and King George.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_890\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-890\" style=\"width: 880px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-890\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_p59-60-Durweston-1024x741.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_p59-60-Durweston-1024x741.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_p59-60-Durweston-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_p59-60-Durweston-768x556.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/W_19_1_p59-60-Durweston.jpg 1164w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Durweston pp.59-60<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The entries for Durlston and Portland describe the fleet setting out to France.\u00a0 The Durlston entry includes a small watercolour of the event.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2026from the cliffs we watched the marvellous sight of countless ships proceeding by a \u201cswept channel\u201d in a long line to the horizon towards the coast of France.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On Portland, one mother, upon seeing the invasion force gathering reflected the relief, anticipation and anxiety of many watching that it should be successful in bringing about the end of the long years of war.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>During the early hours of June 5th, they all slipped away, and we wondered what lay ahead in the way of retaliation by the Germans.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a snapshot of life on the Home Front during World War Two, this volume is a unique record and truly a \u2018Hidden Treasure\u2019!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-891\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/WI-War-Record-evacuees-1024x808.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"880\" height=\"694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/WI-War-Record-evacuees-1024x808.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/WI-War-Record-evacuees-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/WI-War-Record-evacuees-768x606.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/dorset-history-centre-blog\/files\/2019\/06\/WI-War-Record-evacuees.jpg 1976w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Dorset History Centre are working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepmilitarymuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keep Military Museum<\/a> to host a day of commemorative activities and events on Saturday 8 June 2019 (10am-4pm).<\/p>\n<p>At DHC there will be two talks by Lt. Col. (Retd) James Porter about &#8220;<strong><em>Planning and Preparation<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (11.45am-12.15pm) and &#8220;<strong><em>The Landings and Exploitation<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (2.30pm-3.15pm). There will also be a range of primary material to consult, including war diaries, letters from D Day widows, newspapers, photographs, and there will also be the opportunity to listen to some of our Oral History recordings from the Dorset Sound Archive.<\/p>\n<p>At the Keep Military Museum, there will be a range of military vehicles and weapon displays, free entry to the museum and an opportunity to view the newly refurbished World War Two gallery, as well as children&#8217;s activities, and a chance to purchase the newly published &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepmilitarymuseum.org\/shop\/16\/books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>D Day: Spearhead Brigade<\/em><\/a>&#8221; book which tells the tales of 83 survivors of the D Day landings.<\/p>\n<p>At 11am there will be a Drumhead Commemoration Service held at Dorchester Borough Gardens, with music provided by the Durnovaria Silver Band.
