Engineering – The Next Generation

by Duncan Newman, Economic Development Officer

Engineering is a sector with a national critical shortage of skilled employees. I work closely with schools and local businesses to raise the profile of the sector to young people.  It is always very rewarding when I hear of young people studying for an apprenticeship with the support of their employer and making the most of what this opportunity offers.

Recently, we had some talented young apprentices working for world renowned companies come and drop in for coffee with teachers who were undertaking a local employment market refresher session. Some of the apprentices were former students of the teachers and meeting up gave them the opportunity to thank the teachers for giving them the skills and knowledge to gain their apprenticeships. Whilst the teachers were delighted to see students they had taught pursuing with their careers.

Below, you’ll find links to three young people currently working for two local engineering businesses Curtiss-Wright and Ultra Electronics.

It is encouraging to read about young people enjoying their work and their studies and how much they appreciate the support, experience and knowledge of their work colleagues.
