I was more than a little intrigued when I was asked by Young Enterprise if I would join the Dragons’ Den panel to consider pitches from Dorset school students who had set up and run their own businesses. The event was held as part of the Young Enterprise Company Programme.
On the evening nine ‘companies’ pitched their innovative products. It was a real privilege to hear from all the students, especially the younger age groups where it may have been their first time at presenting. The students were confident when detailing their company’s achievements and persuasive in pitching for funds.
There was great interaction between the Dragons and the students and the atmosphere in the room was fantastic! Every group of students was also recognised for the hard work and commitment they had dedicated to their business.
Students from The Grange School called their business ‘Recreativ Lux’ and their business idea is selling creative kits for making tote bags using recycled materials from household items such as quilts and pillowcases. The students were delighted to be awarded a £25 investment and the Sustainability Award.
The next step for the companies is the County final which is due to take place on Tuesday 30th April. Following this event the winning company will get the opportunity to progress onto the regional finals in Bristol and subsequently the international finals in Paris, France.
I wish all the Dorset students the very best of luck with their ventures!
