14th September 1914

No diary entry.

14th September saw the beginning of stagnation which was soon to develop into trench warfare. British trenches above the Aisne consisted of longish burrows with a little earth or chalk shaped out with a grubber. The 4th Division reached the north bank at Chivres but were separated from the 5th by a German stronghold. They were without artillery support so the divisional commander hesitated to order an advance. The men dug in on top of the ridge above the river 1100 yards from the enemy.
