Quiet day on the whole. Snipers active. Fierce battle raging in the North. Very wet night, trenches very muddy.

Snipers active. Very little shelling. Fine. Our Artillery shelled formed bodies of Germans.

Enemy shelled C & D Coy [Company] trenches & sniped continuously all day. 60 killed 15 wounded. Quiet night.

Heavy shelling by our guns in morning. Enemy shelled our trenches & sniped the whole day. 10 casualties.

Heavy shelling all day.”A” Coys Farm demolished & burnt. Wet night and trenches in bad state.

Heavy machine gun & rifle fire at 2 a.m. lasting for one hour. 2 casualties. Little sniping in morning.

23rd October: Trenches – HOUPLINES

A & B trenches shelled with heavies about noon. Capt. Bently Mortally wounded, & Capt. Bannerman wounded and 5 men. Battalion relieved R[oyal] Fusiliers at night & took up very long line. Difficult position with points enfiladed.
