Heavy Rifle fire broke out from the front at 3 am. This was followed by Gas which reached us at 3.30am. Regiment ordered to ‘Stand to Arms’ & put on Respirators, these proved effective where put on properly. At 11 a.m. orders received to advance in support of 2nd R.Dublin Fus. [Royal Dublin Fusiliers] towards Shell Trap Farm, part of this Farm now being held by the Germans. Under very heavy shell fire & Gas Shells the Regiment advanced to 1st Support Trenches. A & B Coys [companies] were moved out to left to get into a position behind CROSS ROADS FARM ready for advance. During this period a good deal of front trench was occupied by Germans on both sides of the Farm & a further advance impossible owing to Machine Guns. Orders were received to occupy & hold 1st Support line trenches (Wieltje Farm). Casualties- Captain Sir G.H.U. Lacon wounded. 95 other ranks Killed Wounded & Missing. Very hot day.
