Enemy Artillery normal except on right. AUCHONVILLERS shelled rather heavily about 4 pm. Also TENDERLOIN, 4TH AVENUE & SUNKEN ROAD. Relieved by 1st Hants, 1st Somersets & 6th Warwicks. 4 Casualties during relief. Capt. BAILY & Lieut. ELLIOTT wounded. Battalion marched to Camp at BERTRANCOURT and all were tired after 9 days severe shelling. Raid which was to take place was cancelled on account of Barrage put up by Enemy Artillery.
A word of thanks for continuing to publish this diary. One sees the transition from Beck’s short period of leave with its innocent day trips to the coast contrasting strongly with the increasing severity of the gassing and shelling in the trenches rendered in limpid diary entries—”…all were tired after 9 days severe shelling…”
