7 Jul Trenches – AUCHONVILLERS

Wet day. Enemy trenches bombarded from 8 to 9 am. Germans retaliated on our front line, and TENDERLOIN. Parapets badly damaged but no casualties. Battalion relieved by 2nd DUB. FUS. & marched to Mailly. “A” Coy went to AUCHONVILLERS. Wet night.

A 5.9 fell very close to my dugout well shook up. Candle put out by explosion & torch switched on. Near thing. Relieved at night through 5th Avenue. Up to waist in mud & water. Trench waders full up. Shelling all night. No sleep.

6 Jul Trenches – AUCHONVILLERS

Fine day. Artillery quiet during morning. Bd General WILDING visited Trenches. Enemy shelled 4rh AVENUE & vicinity of TENERLOIN in afternoon & TENDERLOIN & SUNKEN ROAD at night. A 5.9 burst amonst some Smoke Candles & Bombs which blazed for 5 minutes & was then extinguished.

Lucky night for me just missed. 12 casualties.
