29 Aug Hill 60 Trenches

Fine morning. Quiet. Both sides bombarded with T.M. [trench mortars] & Stokes about 3.30 pm. Arty active. Heavy rains & thunder. Trenches soon swamped. Relieved by 2nd R. Dub Fus [Royal Dublin Fusiliers]. Relief complete about 2.0 am. Gas Alarm 10.50 pm., some shelling, gas on right sector. Heavy storms. Troops reach camp between 5.0 am & 12.0. Everybody tired & very wet.

28 Aug Trenches Hill 60

Fine morning. Showers later. Enemy arty very quiet. Mining Offr. reports Germans working on gallery in front of “A” Coy, so decide to blow him. Miners commence work for blow at 9.0 pm. Working very hard , blow to take place at 2.0 am. Orders given for all ranks to stand to. Mine exploded 2.4 am 28/29 inst. Big shock & much larger crater than expected. Fine sight large cloud smoke, enemy very nervous plenty of Very lights, rifle & Mgunfire. No shelling. Part of our parapet in 39 Trench blown in, 4 Lewis Gunners buried, no wounds shock only. All quiet by 3.30 am. Turned in 3.0 am.

24 Aug Railway Dugouts

Nice day. Spend day in cleaning up & making place as sanitary as possible. Awful job. Enemy shelled in afternoon with 5.9 no damage. Went to take over front line about 7.0 pm. Nearly caught with Whizz Bangs at corner if Jackson St. & Cutting. Near thing. Pte WILSON killed. Pte POULTON wounded. Take over line, very bad & dirty. Relief complete about 1.0 am. Take over from 60th Can. Infy. S.M. FULLER 60th Can. Infy.

23 Aug K.L. Camp

Nice day. C.M. Sgt Kinchin. Stand by for trenches. Parade 3.0 pm. for trenches. March to Railway Dugouts very tiring. ? en route. Take over from 58th Can. Infy [Canadian Infantry] Very dirty. Bttn arrive about 11 pm. Relief complete about 1.0am. CSM ALLBRIGHT & RSM 58th. Leamingtonian
