21 Oct Bivouac

Fine day, misty morning, Bttn has short parades to keep the men fit. We find 280 men for working parties. 4.0 am return. Aircraft active. Very heavy explosion about 4 pm, surmise armaments dump.

20 Oct Bivouac

Fine day. Sharp frosty morning. Bttn finds 270 men for working party. No casualties. Sharp frost at night. Return at 1.0 am. I walk to transport. Hear news of Capt. HYDE’s death & get application sent to 2nd Bttn. Aircraft active.

Very wet all day. Camp in an awful state everyone wet and miserable. Cold all night sharp frost.

Dull nasty morning, heavy mists no good for aircraft. Attack by 11th Brigade. We find 80 men to assist Field Amb. [Ambulance] Heavy shelling at night.

17 Oct Bivouac MONTAUBAN

Fine day but dull. Bttn cleans up & does drill. Brigade finally relieved by 11th Brigade. Heavy rain at night everything damp and miserable, not much sleep. Some shelling at night. Not much sleep.

16 Oct GUILLEMONT

Fine day but dull. Very heavy bombardment by our artillery, some shelling by Huns, no casualties. Bttn relieved at night by 1st East Lancs 11th Bgde. We march back to Bivouac behind MONTAUBAN very cold and not much sleep.

Fine day. Great air activity, many fights but see no results. Heavy shelling all day. 1 LCpl wounded. Gets to ENGLAND.

Bttn in shell holes & bits of trenches. Work on shelters etc. to make cover for the men. Fine day. Very cold at night, not much sleep. Shelling all day & night. Awful mess, no vestige of village. Huns & English unburied. Very bad.

13 Oct Bivouac Trenches

Fine day. Bttn hold on to ground gained and have no casualties to speak of. Bttn relieved at night by 2 Dub Fus & move back to GUILLEMONT. Sgnt MUTLIS (?) killed on relief , rotten luck been out all the time & shot accidentally. Total casualties 254.

12 Oct Bivouac Trenches

Fine day but dull. Bttn heavily shelled, but move forward to the attack at 2.5 pm., gain about 400 yds of ground but not objective. Casualties fairly heavy. Capts RILEY & HARRISON killed and Lt HANKEY & GLYKA killed. Lt SHUTE wounded. Bttn holds its ground & consolidates.
