Thursday 28th March Haute Avesnes

We get orders to stand to about 3.30 am & move back about 9.0 am to Haute Avesnes, where we bivouac just off the main road. Enemy make heavy attack on us, but doesn’t gain much & that after very heavy losses.

Fine day. We get rid of all spare kit etc. Fritz still shelling back areas.

Fine day. We get orders to send away all surplus kit etc to ETRUN & be prepared to move with only two Baggage wagons.

Fine morning. We hear lots of rumours & are on the alert all the time, but nothing happens. Fine night.

Saturday 23 March St Nicholas

Get woke up about 12.30 am orders to move at once. We get packed up but dont move until about 9.0 am. Move onto the main Arras -St Pol road just past Stewart Camp. Have to Bivouac. Maj H gets sudden orders to move at night about 8.30 pm & I take over.

Fine day. Fritz still shelling Arras & back areas. We get lots of rumours but nothing definite. Visit Bttn in the afternoon & return about 8.30 pm.
