Monday 4 February Trenches
Fine clear day. Hostile Arty [Artillery] fairly active on front line TM [Trench Mortar] used. Bttn visited in line by Corps Comdr [Commander]
Sunday 3 February Trenches
Fine day. Arty [Artillery] fairly quiet during day, but very active at night. D Coy work on Lone Trench
Saturday 2 February Trenches
Misty morning but fine later. Aircraft active. Hostile Arty [Artillery] active owing to raid on all night. D Coy supply working party.
Friday 1 February Trenches
Very misty again but fine. We spend the day getting ready to move into Front Line. I do some experimental shooting with a new magazine. Move off for the line about 7.0 pm very dark but fine. We arrive at HdQrs about 9.0 pm and relieve 3/10 Midds [Middlesex Regiment] Relief complete about midnight. I turn in about 3.0 am.
Thursday 31 January Brown Line
Fine morning but very misty. I get packed up & go up to join Bttn after dinner arrive at Quarry HQtrs about 4.0 pm, get a bit of a shack but not much sleep, too cold. Fairly quiet night.
Wednesday 30 January
until 6.0 am. Fine morning but very cold. I get some coffee and buns but feel miserable. Leave ETAPLES at 8.15 am, nice carriage, arrive St. POL mid-day. Leave again about 2.30 pm Arrive AGNEZ-LES-DUISANS about 5.0 pm. Walk from there to RONVILLE arrive about 6.30 pm very tired & fed up. Get warned to go up to Bttn tomorrow. Turn in & have a good sleep.
Tuesday 29 January
Fine morning we arrive ROUEN about 8.0 am & march to Rest Camp. I get a pass from 10.0 am & go out to see Bennett, Hill etc, spend a pleasant time & return to camp about 2.0 pm. March to Stn & leave about 5.0 pm, nice carriage only 4 of us in. Get to ABBEVILLE about 1.0 am ETAPLES about 2.30 am but are allowed to stay in the train
Monday 28 January Le Havre
Fine day, spend the day loafing about, visit the A.S.C. Bakery mess at night & see young Hawton. Receive orders to pde [parade] at 9.30 pm for going away. March to the Stn & entrain in Truck. Leave Havre about 2.0 am, very cold & miserable. I lay down & try to sleep but its no good.
Sunday 27 January
Have a good voyage over, except for one slight shock about midnight, when they thought a sub was sighted. Arrive Havre about 1.0 am but don’t get off until about 8.0 & march to No 2 Rest Camp, where we get told off to sheds & prepare to stay. Lovely day but we are not allowed out. Turn in about 10.0 pm.
