Quiet night. Sniping active on both sides during the day. Enemy artillery more active. MAILLY-MAILLET shelled between 5 & 6 pm. Fine. 1 man killed 5 wounded.

5th Sept.- TRENCHES
More rain during the night. German Machine Guns active. 2 men wounded in “C” Coy’s trench from Shell fire between 8 & 10 pm. Enemy Snipers active during the day. A Coy claimed one German hit.
4th Sept.- TRENCHES
Quiet night and day. One enemy Aerial torpedo fell near C Coy without damage.
A little finer but trenches very wet. Our Snipers successfully kept down enemy’s snipers. “A” Coy reported having shot two Germans. Patrols report very little German work.
3rd Sept.- TRENCHES-SUCRERIE- MAILLY MAILLET
A little shelling with Field Guns & a few trench Mortars on our left Coy, otherwise quiet day. Patrols report little doing in German trenches. Germans called out “We are Saxons, you are Anglo-Saxons. What are we fighting for?” Rain at night. Trenches in bad condition.
2nd Sept- FORCEVILLE
Relieved 1st Kings Own Regt in trenches at 9 pm. Relief complete 11pm. We now occupy another Coy’s frontage on our right Order of Coys. A.D.C. right to left with B Coy in Reserve. Took over WARWICK CASTLE as our Hd Quarters, Quiet night.

Colonel Poole left for England to take over a Brigade at 11 am. Band of 12th Field Ambulance played him off. Major G.N.B.Forster took over command of the Battalion.

Battalion was paraded at 10 am. for Colonel A.J.Poole to bid them farewell & he said he thanked all ranks for the hearty support he had received during his tenure of Command & looked on his promotion not as a compliment to himself but as a compliment to the Regiment.
