Fine morning. Barrage opens 5.30am. Seaforths [Seaforth Highlanders] & Kings Own attack, good progress & all objectives reached. Lots of prisoners & 5 guns taken, good many officers. Wet about 10.0am, rain nearly all day. We move back to Vereham at 4.20pm, arrive about 6.0pm. Stay the night. Fritz sending some HV over.

Thursday 24 October

Arrive Assembly Area at about 12.30am & dig in HdQrs [Head Quarters] in sunken road, very cold, we improve our trenches & wait for attack. Zero hour 4.0am. Heavy barrage 240 FGuns [Field Guns] in support of our Div [Division]. 11th Bgde Left 10th Bgde Right. Wks [Warwickshire Regiment] on Left, D of W [Duke of Wellingtons Regiment] Right, Seaforths [Seaforth Highlanders] support. Attack fairly successful, we get 1st & 2nd objectives & take VERCHAIN, held up by sunken road & heavy MGuns [Machine Guns] but do very well, take about 150 prisoners 12 MGuns & 2 TMortars [Trench Mortars]. Our casualties 94. Lt Martin killed, Lt Smith & Harrison Wd [wounded]. Get relieved by Kings Own about 10.0pm, very cold & tired.
