Fine day. Nothing much doing. Sir D Haig goes up in car, so perhaps may mean something. Fritz strafes again about 6.0pm, no damage. Heavy strafe at night on our left. Fine night.

Sunday 22 September Guemappe

Fine morning, some rain later. Have a bath & Bevan does my washing. Fritz strafes us about 6.0pm. Sgnt Plackett slightly wounded on wrist. Heavy gunfire at night.

Showery all day, finer at night, we change dug-outs & make a place for the stores. Fairly quiet. Some excitement at night, a Jerry comes over after the sausage but doesn’t get it.

Orders to move this morning to Guemappe. Fine day, we move off by Lorry about 10.30am & get to Schramm Bks. March to St. Saviour & then get another Lorry to Guemappe, just arrive when Jerry comes over & fires a sausage, proper cheeky. Fine night. We get a cave to sleep in.

Fine day. I take NCO’s class as usual. Rumours of a move. I bike to Bethonsail in the afternoon & back to tea. Bonne Sante at night & not too good.

Fine day, NCO’s class as usual. Div Cmdr [Divisional Commander] visits us. I have a chat with him, seems alright. Play MG Bttn [Machine Gun Battalion] at night very good game 0-0. Team: Reading, Todd, Rusby, Edwards, Evans, McMahon, Dyke, Watson, Orton, Hopkins, Hubbard.

Sunday 15 September Bailleul

Fine day. Church pde 10.0am. I go with running team to Chateau de la Haie for relay race. Get there about 1.30pm. We run 3rd but get no prize. Get back about 7.30pm.

Fine day. Bttn [Battalion] out training & shooting. Dinners out, return about 5.0pm. Sgts Whist drive at night. Plackett wins, very nice time.
