Dorset Care Record – Review of the Year 2022

In our final think-piece of 2022, our Head of Service Andy Cowling looks back at some of the success stories of the past year and ahead to some of the interoperability plans to further enhance the Dorset Care Record

I can’t believe that it has been 12 months since I was asked to write the last one of these – time certainly flies in the world of the Dorset Care Record (DCR).

First off, let’s look at some of our key statistics for the year:

  1. We have increased our average daily uses from 2,000 to over 3,000 which shows a significant 50% improvement
  2. We have generated over £2.7m in non-cash releasing benefits for the Dorset system
  3. We have managed to surpass a major milestone in training over 5,000 health and social care professionals
  4. We have delivered nine pilots, involving real patients, for our patient portal myDCR.

These statistics will grab the headlines and myself and the team are rightly proud of them but they don’t tell the whole story – just the end results of all of the hard work that the PMO, Orion Health and our partners put into the programme every day. Volunteering - Charmouth

Collecting litter along the Jurassic Coast – Our volunteering day

Members of the Dorset Care Record (DCR) and Wessex Care Record (WCR) teams provided a helping hand for nature recently, spending time litter picking on the Jurassic Coast.

The dozen staff joined the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre manager Ali Ferris to comb through debris washed up on the beach by the week’s storms, finding wooden pallets, washed up flood defence debris, tyre inners, rope netting, plastics and microbeads. Dorset Care Record Stakeholder Update – November 2022

Welcome to our latest stakeholder update about progress of the Dorset Care record and our new patient portal, myDCR.

1        Additional information in our shared care record

Adult alerts from Dorset Council are being added shortly to the Dorset Care Record. The new feed will allow GPs to know whether adult social care is involved with a specific patient and in what circumstance, based upon the alert that is now available in the system. Sharing this type of information can also enable early interventions to prevent the escalation of risk, coordinate effective and efficient response across our health and social care partnership and prevent abuse and harm that may increase the need for care and support.

We have also added a number of new document types to DCR from Dorchester County Hospital (DCH) – these include documents from Maternity, Cancer MDT and very recently pre-op assessments.

2        Ringwood medical practice supplying patient information

Clinicians and social care staff can now access GP data though our shared care record from the Ringwood Medical Practice in Hampshire. The GP practice, part of the Avon Valley Primary Care Network, is the first cross-border surgery to provide this information. To find out more about cross-border work with GP practices go to Ringwood Medical Practice supplies patient information to the Dorset Care Record – Dorset Care Record (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk)

We are working with other non-Dorset GP practices and hope to have more information soon. Continue reading “Dorset Care Record Stakeholder Update – November 2022”

Utilising the Dorset Care Record – a perspective from medicines management

University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) Medicines Management Technician Katy George has been using the Dorset Care Record for the past two years, after hearing of its benefits from colleagues.

Complementing the role of hospital pharmacists, Katy is involved in supplying medication to patients while they are in hospital, in preparation for their discharge; counselling patients on their past and current medication; carrying out technical checks and liaising with members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure a safe and efficient service.

Katy uses the DCR hundreds of times a month to complete medicine reconciliation and drug histories of patients, updating medicines data from GPs and discharge letters. Continue reading “Utilising the Dorset Care Record – a perspective from medicines management”

Orion Health customer conference in Bristol

“Ensuring the right patient gets the right care in the right place at the right time..”

The theme of the Orion Health customer conference in Bristol earlier this month was on building on the shared care records to make healthcare more efficient for organisations and clinicians, to coordinate care for patients and to move towards population health management approaches. Our Communications lead Tony McDougal reports.

Covid-19 has accelerated changes and the digitalisation of healthcare with a strong focus on data to improve the health and care experience for both clinicians and patients.

Newly appointed Orion Health Chief Executive Officer Brad Porter said around the world, countries were releasing data strategies that focus on the need to make healthcare more equitable and accessible to those who it need it most. Dorset Council Chief Executive Matt Prosser meeting the DCR team at County Hall, Dorchester

Briefing Dorset Council’s Chief Executive Matt Prosser

The Dorset Care Record team last week hosted Dorset Council’s Chief Executive Matt Prosser, briefing him of developments around our shared care record and pilot patient record.

He was given a demonstration of the DCR in the test environment with Test manager Georgina Hulbert running through its functionality with focus on benefits for a council employee. Our business analyst Sam Belhomme then talked about the myDCR patient pilots and its functionality, showcasing a video showing how it will empower patients to have a better understanding of their health and care.

This was followed by a general discussion on the cross-Dorset working and the nature of our blended team, with a focus on our benefits work and DC’s performance across the DCR Partnership. Continue reading “Briefing Dorset Council’s Chief Executive Matt Prosser”

Engagement at WCR

Last chance to give your views on sharing patient information

There’s a final opportunity for people in Dorset to give their views on how patient information is shared by health and care services – and in particular, what would give them trust and confidence in how this is done and where they prefer to get this information from on this important topic.

It’s all part of a programme of research being carried out by our sister organisation, the Wessex Care Records (WCR) programme, with the results being used to develop a plan for future citizen communications and engagement on information sharing.

There’s been a great response to the Wessex Care Records citizen survey but there’s still time to complete it by the closing date of next Friday (19 August) – please feel free to share the survey with family or friends if you think it would be of interest.

There’s more information on this research, including some helpful FAQs on the Wessex Care Records website or get in touch with Tim Smith, Communications and Engagement  Manager for WCR.
