How a community pharmacist uses the Dorset Care Record during the week

Instant answers to queries is one of the most useful elements of the Dorset Care Record for community pharmacist David Rose.

David, who runs the pharmacy at Marnhull in North Dorset, has been the most extensive user of the shared care record: “The most useful thing is you get answers to queries and you can sort out the problem. Now, you don’t have to come back to it or chase for answers later if someone hasn’t got back to you.

“You can also look for answers to queries you have referred and no reply has been received, which happens fairly often. Continue reading “How a community pharmacist uses the Dorset Care Record during the week”

Community Pharmacies and the Dorset Care Record – Webinar

In the second of our series of webinars, Dorset Local Pharmaceutical Committee chief officer Amanda Moores and Marnhull pharmacist David Rose explore the benefits of using the Dorset Care Record. In conversation with the DCR’s communications manager Tony McDougal, they tackle the differences between the DCR and Summary Care Record, how pharmacists can get the most of shared care record and the regional and national situation.

Webinar: Community Pharmacies and the Dorset Care Record

Come and listen to Amanda Moores, Dorset Local Pharmaceutical Committee (Dorset LPC) chief officer and a community pharmacist David Rose, from Marnhull Pharmacy, in conversation with the Dorset Care Record’s communications and engagement officer Tony McDougal on how community pharmacists are using the shared care record.

Community pharmacies in Dorset have been able to access the Dorset Care Record for the past 18 months, which has prompted national interest.

Among the issues under the spotlight will be encouraging national chains to get involved, how can pharmacists get the most out of share care records and how can we encourage more community pharmacies to get involved.

The free webinar will take place on Monday 28 February from 12.30-1.15pm and is open to all.

Ended care spells changes marks greater understanding of patients across community settings

Clinical software firm TPP has made changes to its national estate allowing Dorset Care Record viewers to see a history of interactions between different services in community settings.

Until now, when a patient’s care spell is ended in a SystmOne community unit, the information was no longer shared and was not visible to clinicians using the DCR. For example, information around a patient who was under a physio team would no longer be shown when they were discharged. If they were previously admitted to Blandford Hospital, it wouldn’t show, but now it does.

The changes will benefit users who frequently look for community interactions, such as social care staff, who will now be able to see historic community spells. Continue reading “Ended care spells changes marks greater understanding of patients across community settings”

Graph showing rise in use of Dorset Care Record

On track for 750,000 views in 2022

We passed a number of milestone in January as the Dorset Care Record saw the largest number of records accessed (67,530) and log-ins ( 61,037).

For the first time, University Hospitals Dorset (covering Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch and Poole Hospitals) had over 40,000 log-ins to the system.

And practitioners at Dorset County Hospital accessed more than 10,000 patient records in January – another first.

Projections based on this month is there to be over 750,000 patient views this year, showing the increasing maturity of our record.

Information Available in the Dorset Care Record

Below is our updated table showing what information is currently available in the Dorset Care Record.

Testing for the pathology feeds for University Hospitals Dorset is shortly to get underway and we are hopeful this will be on stream later this spring.

We continue to work with our partners across health and social care to get more feeds in to the Dorset Care Record.

On the front line tackling COVID-19

One of our project managers, Kerry Griffin, has for the past 4 months been dividing her time with a front-line role in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. In our latest blog, Kerry highlights some of the lessons learned from her stint managing Dorset’s Mobile Testing Units.

Earlier this Autumn, I saw an advert for a secondment for a part-time project manager to hit the ground running and manage Dorset’s Mobile Testing Units (MTUs). The role appealed to me as I wanted to do my bit to help support the Council’s Covid work and living in the community I thought I was well-suited to the post.

My role is to provide the logistics for the MTUs across Dorset that carry out PCR tests for people to see if they have Covid. Although the actual tests are run by the NHS, it is up to local government to sort out the facilities. Continue reading “On the front line tackling COVID-19”

Facts and stats as the year draws to a close

In what has been a hugely pressured year for health and care staff, we have been really pleased to see the Dorset Care Record grow in leaps and bounds over the past 12 months.

At the end of last year, there were 2,076 employees from across the Dorset Care Record partnership trained to use our shared care record. As the year closes, this figure has risen to 3,461 – a jump of 1,385. It means that nearly 4 people joined the DCR every day this year. A Clinical Coder in the NHS at work

Clinical Coders – How they use the Dorset Care Record

Clinical coding is the process of transforming the information about diseases or procedures recorded in the health records into numeric or alphanumeric codes, in order to categorise health record information.

It allows for reliable collation, aggregation and comparison of healthcare data on local and national platforms. As well as being useful for auditing purposes, it is used for tracking patients outcomes and measuring treatment effectiveness.

And increasingly clinical coders are using our Dorset Care Record to help them, particularly across Dorset’s acute hospitals. Continue reading “Clinical Coders – How they use the Dorset Care Record”

Andy Cowling, Head of Service at Dorset Care Record

Our Review of 2021

In our final think-piece of the year, Our Head of Service Andy Cowling looks back at the highlights of the past 12 months

Wow! Another year has flown by in the world of the Dorset Care Record (DCR) – or should I say another record breaking year in the world of the Dorset Care Record as we have seen use of the system increase in terms of average daily use from 350 per day to over 1,800 per day!

This growth can largely be attributed to the hard work of our partners in working closely with their clinical colleagues to spread the word. Particular mention should go to University Hospitals Dorset for their major push in increasing their single sign on access this year. We have also enabled single sign on access for GPs and mental health staff at Dorset HealthCare so look forward to hopefully continuing to see our numbers climb throughout 2022.
