People living in Dorset can look forward to enhanced coordinated care as further records are joined up within the Dorset Care Record (DCR).
The next tranche of health and social care records are coming on stream this week, which will mean that more than a quarter of the proposed data feeds within the Dorset Care Record have been successfully integrated.

A man’s life has been saved thanks to the Dorset Care Record.
The middle-aged man, who has complex learning difficulties, a history of alcohol dependency and a form of psychosis, has in the past often presented himself to hospitals saying he had something in his heart or something was trying to get out of his stomach.
Anna Cosslett, Chief Clinical Information Officer at Dorset HealthCare, said she had noticed some weeks ago that the man also exhibited very high cholesterol levels: “We managed with his GP to add this information to the man’s Summary Care Record, which feed in to the Dorset Care Record (DCR). We said that he should be physically examined before being discharged if he presented himself again at hospital,” she told the DCR Programme Board this week.
The man presented himself at Dorset County Hospital and the first consultant, who did not have access to the DCR, referred him to a psychiatrist on mental health grounds. The second consultant looked on his Dorset Care Record as the first port of call and after tests realised he had suffered a heart attack. He has been treated in Dorchester and is recovering.
Orion Senior Marketing Manager Katy Brooks writes about how sharing patient data can support direct care, highlighting the work being carried out with the Northern Ireland Electronic Care Record and the North of Scotland Care Portal. Orion Health are the technical partner of the Dorset Care Record.

Here’s a good example from Dorset Council showing how the Dorset Care Record helps social care staff on a daily basis: “This client has a number of health issues, so I was looking up which teams were involved with her and to check if she had been referred to the Memory Assessment Service. I found out that she was being seen in the diabetic foot clinic, she had visits from the District Nurses to dress her legs and that she had bloods taken to investigate her memory but no referral had been made to the memory assessment service or community mental health team as yet.
